What is Tadalafil

Tadalafil is a member of the class Phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor. The drugs belonging to this class are used to prevent the degradation of phosphodiesterase type 5 on cyclic GMP. This process of degradation generally takes place inside the smooth muscle cells which line the blood vessels that reach the corpus cavernosum of the penis. The drugs of this type are used to treat patients suffering from erectile dysfunction. Traces of phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor which is also known as PDE5 can be found in smooth muscles of the arterial walls inside the lungs. Hence, it can be used to address and solve the problems of the patients suffering from pulmonary hypertension.

Tadalafil is responsible for increasing the levels of cyclic guanosine monophosphate which helps in easing the pulmonary vascular smooth muscle cells and dilating the blood vessels belonging to the pulmonary vascular bed. This drug is also capable of suppressing and blocking the action of phosphodiesterase type 5 in order to increase the concentration of nitric oxide present at the end of the nerves as well as in the endothelial cells of the penis' corpus cavernosum. This helps in dilating the blood vessels which in turn increases the flow of blood into the corpus cavernosum of the penis. This facilitates erection of penis when the patient gets stimulated sexually. The effects of this drug on children haven't been studied yet.

General Info

Tadalafil is capable of inhibiting the action of phosphodiesterase type 5 in order to treat the patients suffering from erectile dysfunction. It falls in the category of ‘oral treatment'. The patients suffering from erectile dysfunction are advised to take a 10 mg Tadalafil tablet before getting involved in any form of sexual activity. The patients are asked to consume only a single tablet per day. It can be consumed without paying any heed to the timings at which food is consumed by the patients. Tadalafil is egested out of the body in the form of metabolites. Most of it usually passes out with feces and the remaining concentration is excreted out with urine. A 10 mg dose of Tadalafil is capable enough to treat patients suffering from minor hepatic impairment. However, the dose of Tadalafil required to treat the patients afflicted with acute hepatic impairment is undetermined. Once a patient takes a tablet of 10mg Tadalafil, this drug is not drained out of the patient's body until around 2 days after its consumption. This drug has been developed for men and hence, should not be taken by a woman. However, it can be taken by a woman to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension. If taken after consulting a physician, it can treat male impotency. Overdose may have adverse effects on the patient and hence in instances of overdose, one should consult a physician immediately. Tadalafil 10 mg is sold under the brand names Adcirca and Cialis.
